Wales or Cymru Photos

Wales / Cymru is an integral part of the United Kingdom while maintaining aspects of its own culture. Since 1997, some governmental powers, previously held by London, have devolved to a Welsh elected assembly in Cardiff. In the 19thC & early 20thC coal & slate mining in the mountainous center were crucial components of the Welsh economy, but suffered a severe economic downturn in mid 20thC. Recently Wales has diversified with tourism. Its many historic sites are highlighted by the castles built by Edward I during & after his 13thC conquest of Wales. Cardiff is a showcase of Welsh 21stC prosperity as well as the beautiful Edwardian Baroque buildings.
