Penrhyn Castle Photos

Penrhyn Castle (English National Trust) is located in northern Wales just outside of Bangor on a hill overlooking Menai Straight. The huge structure (1820) was designed by architect Thomas Hopper, in neo-Norman style. The country house was meant to showcase the wealth of Pennant family who derived a fortune from Welsh slate mining & Jamaican sugar. The Grand Hall, with its impressive vaulted ceiling, rises the full height of the structure. The house is also notable for its art collection, plasterwork, wood & stone carvings, and furniture, some designed by Hopper. Castle admissions include visits to a Welsh mining railway museum.
