Cardiff, capital of Wales, hosts several Welsh national museums. Its port area is the site of the nation's Parliament and has undergone an architectural Renaissance. On the Bristol Channel, Cardiff was first settled as a Romans fort (1stC). Normans (11thC) & British rule followed. Cardiff expanded in the late 18thC with upland mining of coal & iron exported via Cardiff. After coal declined (post WWII) Cardiff suffered an economic downturn until the 1990's, when a major re-development of the docklands reversed the decline. |
