Cardiff Castle dates back 2000 years to when it was a Roman fort. In the centuries after the conquest of England by William the Conqueror (1066), the castle's defenses were greatly strengthened against many aggressors. In the later 19thC the architect, William Burges & his patron, the 3rd Marquess of Bute, turned the interior into a Victorian medieval fantasy world. Also of interest are the Clock Tower, the restored ancient castle Keep, the restored Roman walls, a Military Museum & an air raid shelter created in the tunnels under the castle walls during WWII. In 1947 the Bute family gave the castle to the city of Cardiff. |
