New Zealand is an isolated Pacific island nation; so far south it straddles the Antarctic Circle. Most of its population inhabits the warmer northern end of the North Island. Because of its isolation, before Maori & later British settlers, with animals, arrived, plants were primitive & unique bird species evolved. Many of these unique species are threatened by human settlement and introduced animals, but the NZ government has taken strong protective measures. The living Maori culture is evident on the North Island as are many examples of Maori artistic accomplishments. Photos from 1996. |
