Russell, Waitangi & North Penninsula Photos

North of Auckland are two heritage towns: Russell , a former whaling station of dubious reputation. Today the charming town preserves many of its 19thC buildings; Waitangi is the site of the treaty between the Maori & British settlers which formalized the foundation of a British colony in NZ. On the site are the Treaty House (1833), the ornately carved Maori Meeting House (1940) with carvings done by Pine Taiapa & a large War Canoe with carvings made from Kauri trees.
