Salem, MA is a town known for its witch trials, but which rose to early prominence for the shipping trade it established with the Orient and other parts of the world. When the town went into decline because its port was to shallow for larger, faster ships, its rich architectural heritage was locked in time. Now those early American structures and mansions form the core of Salem's tourist industry, with some being managed and interpreted by the National Park Service.
