St John, Evangelist Photos

St John the Apostle & Evangelist (c9-c100), younger brother of St James the Greater, and author of a Biblical Gospel, is symbolized with an eagle plus sometimes a book. In most cases he is presented with the other three Evangelists. St John is considered to be an Apostle of Christ and is also known by the name John of Patmos, after his exile to that Greek island. He was the only apostle at Christ's crucifixion where Jesus placed Mary in his care. In his Apostle role, his symbol can be a chalice with a snake (poison) which St John drank & survived. On Patmos, St John is considered the author of the Book of Revelation (the Apocalypse).
