Aachen, the most westerly city in Germany, is known for its hot springs (a spa since 1st century), but is more famous as the place where Charlemagne was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 800 CE, where he held court, & was buried in the Octagon of Palatine Chapel of Aachen Cathedral. Between the 10th & 16th centuries, 30 princes were crowned King of Germania at Aachen Cathedral. The octagonal Cathedral and its Treasury host important religious art. Also notable are the 14thC Town Hall, built on the site of Charlemagne palace, and the New Aachen City Museum which presents the city's history in a modern way. |
