Charlemagne, Holy Roman Emperor Photos

Charlemagne (aka Charles the Great & Karl der Grosse, King of the Franks & Lombards) was, in 800 CE, crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III in Aachen where he held his Court throughout his reign. Charlemagne united most of western and central Europe, His Court was a center of culture, intellectual activity and Christianity. Charlemagne died in Aachen in 814 and his remains are enshrined in Aachen Cathedral.
