The Arts & Crafts Movement emerged in the 1880s as a revolt against the mass production of the industrial revolution. Less an organized movement and more of a philosophy and style for home decorative arts and architecture of houses, Arts & Crafts espoused high-quality, simple design without excessive ornamentation, and use of natural materials mostly handcrafted. Originally advocated by John Ruskin and William Morris the Arts & Crafts basic styles were adopted by various artisans and architects which altered designs in many directions. By using hundreds of photos, this essay is designed to help users identify the manifestations of what are considered to be Arts & Crafts objects. The Movement lasted until the 1930s and overlapped with other styles, such as Art Nouveau, which causes issues in the definition of styles. |
