Frederick Carder's Steuben Glass at Corning Museum of Glass Photos

Frederick Carder (1863-1963) & Thomas G. Hawkes founded Steuben Glass in 1903. Within two years Carder invented iridescent Aurene glass & had over 1,000 Art Nouveau designs on the market. In 1918, Steuben was bought by Corning Glass Works & Carder stayed as Steuben's director until 1933. Carder was then promoted to Corning's design director where he supervised large scale architectural and one-of-a-kind pieces until he retired at age 96. His Steuben successor shifted Steuben's output from Carder's colored glass to heavy blown & cut crystal. An extensive collection of Carder's work is displayed in a wing of the Corning Museum of Glass.
