Augsburg Bavaria, one of three oldest cities in Germany, was founded by Romans around the time of Emperor Augustus, and became a major stop on the trading route between Italy and Germany. By the 16thC Augsburg was a financial center of Europe, controlled by Fugger and Welser families. Among Augsburg many historic sites and museums, especially notable are the Goldener Sal (golden room) in city hall; Fuggerei, first social housing complex in the world; Leopold Mozart Haus, where father of Wolfgang Mozart was born and raised; and Maximilian Museum which features decorative arts & metal work (often gold), almost all of which was made by Augsburg craftsmen over the centuries. |
