The Cotswolds refer to a group of small towns covering five counties in southwest England. The towns, a short drive from one to another, are prosperous, yet have avoided intrusion by modern development. The basis of their prosperity was the medieval wool trade. A visit to the Cotswolds, by car or via footpaths, offers strolls through towns with streets lined with vintage buildings, little changed on the exterior, constructed with golden Cotswold stone. The countryside is dotted with a variety of English country manors, some of which are open to the public. |
