St Simon the Cananite, Apostle Art Photos

St Simon the Cananite (aka the Zealot) (Martyred 1st C) is one of the least known of the Apostles. His title, Cananite, is derived from the Aramaic word for zealot which may refer to his rigid adherence to Jewish Torah law or his participation in a zealot group which passionately hated the Romans for imposing their pagan ways and taxes on the Jewish population. Tradition holds that after Christ's resurrection, Simon preached in Egypt and was martyred in Persia. There are several legends about where and how Simon was martyred. However, he is mostly represented in art as having been cut in half with a saw.
