St Matthew, Apostle Photos

St Matthew Apostle (aka Matthew the Levite) (1st C) is often referred to in scripture as the tax collector. He was called by Jesus to become one of the original 12 Apostles even though he was unpopular among the Jewish people because of his trade. According to tradition, Matthew preached in Judea and then in Ethiopia or Persia where he might have been martyred. Matthew is considered by some Christians to have been the author of the first gospel. (But we are presenting the Apostle separately from the Evangelist).

Attrib: If portrayed with an angel or book or grouped with other Evangelists, consider the portrayal to be Matthew the Evangelist. Otherwise if grouped with Apostles, Matthew has no distinct symbol.
