Courts on Île de la Cité, Paris Photos

The Palais de Justice (on Île de la Cité) was built as a royal palace (1781-7) on the site of an earlier palace destroyed by fire. The architects were Joseph-Abel Couture, Pierre Desmaisons & Jacque-Denis Antoine. The use as courthouse was instituted after the French Revolution. In time other Palace buildings were adapted or added for other judiciary & policing functions. The Palais de Justice building wraps around St Chapelle and abuts the Conciergerie.
