Saint Louis IX (lived Apr. 25, 1214 - Aug. 25, 1270)
  • 1226: King Louis crowned in Reims at age 12. His mother, Blanche of Castile, ruled as regent.
  • c1234: Louis assumed rule, married Margaret of Provence, continued Paris public health & defense works.
  • 1241: Louis built Sainte-Chapelle in Paris as his personal chapel
  • July 21, 1242: Battle of Taillebourg: Louis annexed parts of Aquitaine, Maine & Provence.
  • 1248: Louis joined Seventh Crusade: Captures Damietta, Egypt but crusaders are then captured in Egypt; Louis is ransomed in 1250.
  • 1250-1254: Louis lived in Latin kingdoms of Acre, Caesarea, and Jaffa to help Crusaders.
  • 1255 Louis IX returned to France; gained reputation of fairness & moral integrity; reorganized royal administrative system & standardized coinage.
  • Louis noted for personally serving lepers, beggars & poor.
  • 1257: Louis founded Sorbonne University in Paris.
  • 1259: Louis signed several peace treaties including Treaty of Paris allowing English King Henry III to keep Aquitaine but obliging Henry to declare himself Louis's vassal.
  • 1270: Louis joined Eighth Crusade: After landing in Carthage, Tunisia, Louis died of dysentery.
  • Aug. 9, 1297: King Louis IX canonized a saint.
