Würzburg, Bavaria Photos

Würzburg is located in Bavaria on the banks of the Main River, in the heart of Franconian wine country. Bombings destroyed most of the city during WWII, but the historically important buildings were accurately reconstructed in the post-war period. The Prince-Bishops who ruled Würzburg for centuries commissioned the building of the Residenz (1720-44) in imitation of the Palace of Versailles and the best known tourist attraction. Other structures of note include Marienburg Fortress, Neumunster Collegiate Church, Marienkapelle, and the Alte Brucke, lined with statues, over the Main River.
