Jackfield Tile Museum, Ironbridge Photos

The Jackfield Tile Museum traces the history of English ceramic tiles. While tiles were used for floors in Medieval times, it was not until the 1840s that the screw press was first used to produce tiles in large numbers. These machines pressed damp (not wet aka plastic) powdered clay into molds under high pressure, cutting costs on fuel for drying & speeding production. After Joseph Lister's 1860s discoveries about bacterial sterilization, public buildings like butcher shops, hospitals, pubs & subway stations accelerated their tile usage for cleanliness. Art tiles also became popular.
