King James I (James VI of Scotland) Photos

Ruled England 24 March 1603 - 27 March 1625. James VI of Scotland & I of England became the English King upon the death of Elizabeth I. Elizabeth I had imprisoned and eventually executed his mother, Mary Queen of Scots, because she was a Catholic with a potential claim on the English throne. James, mostly separated from his mother, was raised a staunch Protestant. After having a highly controlled childhood, James instituted the doctrine of the Divine Right of Kings, maintaining that the King was above the law and answerable only to God. He is best known for having commissioned the King James Bible which became the standard version of the English Bible for centuries to come.
