King George VI Photos

Ruled Great Britain 11 December 1936 - 6 February 1952. George VI came unexpectedly to the throne after the abdication of his older brother, Edward VIII. Unlike his brother, George VI was a family man who took his royal duties very seriously. He reigned during a very dangerous time for Britain: the lead up to WWII, the war itself, when Britain was heavily bombed, and under threat of invasion, and the difficult post-war rebuilding and recovery. When he became King, George VI considered himself totally unprepared for the role. However, he came to be greatly loved by the British people for all he had done to boost morale during the war.
