King George V Photos

Ruled Great Britain 6 May 1910 - 20 January 1936. George V became King after a naval career where he was exposed to more of ordinary life than most Royals. He was known for being straightforward in his thinking and actions. He and his wife, Mary of Teck, regularly visited the Western Front during WWI to greet Commonwealth troops. After the war, he understood, more than most politicians, that the Old Order was gone, and thus helped Britain avoid the upheavals which had brought down royal families in other European countries. He worked hard to meet people of all classes and political leanings, and maintained friendly relations with trade union members. He also advised the government to be moderate in its response when protests and strikes did occur.
