King George IV Photos

Ruled Great Britain 29 January 1820 - 26 June 1830. George IV spent much of his adult life as Prince of Wales and became King near Age 60. However, he was Prince Regent for 9 years due to his father's mental illness, in essence taking over from his father as ruler. After his private marriage (as a young man to a Roman Catholic) was declared invalid, George IV eventually acquiesced to an acceptable marriage but, the only child of that union, a daughter, died in child birth leaving George IV without an immediate heir. Thus, his younger brother inherited the throne as William IV. A major event in George IV's reign was his visit to Scotland, the first by a Monarch since the Stuarts. George IV's participation in Scottish traditions during this highly ceremonial visit essentially ended the English suppression of Scottish culture.
