A.W.N. Pugin & Gothic Revival Art Photos

Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852) is an architect known for rebuilding of Palace of Westminster (British Parliament) in London along with its clock tower, commonly called Big Ben. Pugin designed many churches in England and in doing so promoted the Gothic Revival style which he felt put English religion on the right path. Pugin is noted for designing Gothic revival encaustic tiles made by Minton & Co of Staffordshire. The encaustic technique allowed several clay colors to form a pattern in the same tile. By the 1850s these Gothic designs were the go-to look in churches & public buildings, they were even adopted for the floors of the U.S. Capitol. Since there were many factories adopting the Pugin designs, this page on Pugin and Gothic tiles, includes some which illustrate the trend, even if there is no confirmed attribution.
