Linlithgow Palace Photos

Linlithgow Palace (c1424-1624 with 5 building periods) was birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots (Dec. 8, 1542) and the earliest surviving Scottish royal palace (though most upper rooms have no roof). Not only was Linlithgow home to Scottish Royalty, it was also used by Scottish Parliament; Cromwell's troops (1650-9); & Bonnie Prince Charles (1745). The fountain (1534-41) in the courtyard is a highlight of any visit & served as a model for the one at Holyroodhouse. Linlithgow is run as museum by Historic Scotland (HES) and is an easy drive west of Edinburgh, usually visited together with Blackness Castle.
