Dunfermline Abbey Photos

Dunfermline Abbey and Palace are built on the site of the church of Queen Margaret of Scotland (11th C), a Saint who spread Christianity and unity in Scotland. The most historic building remaining is the Abbey's Nave (12th C) built by her son David I. The facing 12th C palace (now ruins) was the site where several Scottish kings were born including Charles I (1600). The Abbey Nave & Palace are run as a museum by Historic Scotland (HES). The site of the old Abbey's transept is now the Dunfermline New Abbey Church, the rediscovered burial site of King Robert the Bruce (buried 1329). The New Abbey & burial grounds are open free to the public.
