County Street Historic District, New Bedford, MA Photos

The County Street Historic District of New Bedford, MA has many of the stately mansions resulting from the riches made on the whaling industry. Of note are the Rotch-Jones-Duff House Museum and houses along Madison Street which include the Melville House (1855) where author Herman Melville stayed with relatives. Several of these houses are accented by Widows Walks on the roofs where wives who stayed behind watched for returning whaling ships.
