Uffizi Gallery Building, Florence Photos

The Uffizi (1560) was originally built by the Medici rulers to consolidate government offices which administered Florence. The building, originally designed by Giorgio Vasari lined two sides of street which runs between the Arno River & Piazza della Signoria. The street became a long Plaza in itself & may be the first planned streetscape anywhere, lined by windows & neoclassical facades. An arcaded bridge at the Arno end allows communications between the two wings of the structure. Art collected by the Medici's soon filled the corridors & magnificently decorated office rooms & evolved into the internationally renowned art gallery.
