Dublin Castle, Dublin Photos

The site of Dublin Castle was originally a Viking settlement (c1000 CE) which was rebuilt as a Norman Castle (c1275) of which only the Record tower remains visible. In the 18th C, the British constructed a Georgian palace using a layout similar to the original structure which burned in 1673. The British ruled Ireland from Dublin Castle until 1922. Today the Republic of Ireland uses the State Apartments for ceremonial occasions and allows public tours. Guided tours also visit uncovered Viking & Norman foundations below grade. Other parts of the Castle used for government functions are not open for tours.
