St John the Baptist Photos

St John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. John's symbols include a lamb, his rustic camel-skin robe with fur, and a cross with a tall staff. Since he was beheaded by Herod, John's head is sometimes shown on a platter. John is thought to be a cousin of Jesus so John is often painted in scenes of the Holy Family as is his mother St Elizabeth (see Holy Family page). St John the Baptist is sometimes paired with St John Evangelist, not for religious reasons, but rather because an art patron was named John (e.g. a King of Spain). He often appears in group paintings of saints.
