Gas Lamps Photos

In the late 18th C, gas replaced oil as a more convenient and brighter source of light. Gas lamps are recognized by the fact that glass shades point upwards and there is usually a valve on the lowest curve of the pipe feeding gas to the burners to allow residents to reach to adjust the flame brightness. Gas continued in use in the electric era since electric power was often unreliable. Thus, early electric lamp chandeliers combined gas jets pointing up and electric bulb sockets pointing down. If a fixture was originally designed for gas but is now converted to electricity, we still include it in this gas category.
