Greek Ceramic Krater Photos

Krater (pl. krateres) are ceramic jugs for mixing wine & water.
  • Bell kraters are shaped like up-side-down bells without a footed pedestal.
  • Volute kraters have two vertical scroll-like handles projecting above a body sitting on a footed pedestal.
  • Column kraters sport handles supported by columns.
  • Calyx kraters have horizontal handles lower-down on a flower-shaped mixing bowl on a footed pedestal.
Kraters, having been the focus of wine events, are some of the most elaborately decorated of ancient Greek ceramics.
