Early Staffordshire Pottery Photos

North Staffordshire, England became a center of ceramic production in the early 17th Century. Now called Stoke-on-Trent (aka Stoke) the region encompasses the former production towns of Burslem, Fenton, Hanley, Longton, Stoke, and Tunstall. Hundreds of small Staffordshire firms made ceramics of which the best known are Spode, Aynsley, Burleigh, Doulton, Dudson, Mintons, Moorcroft, Davenport, Twyford, & Wedgwood. Because so many small factories were copying from each other, it is often difficult to know who produced what. The region's important technical advances were Creamware & underglaze transfer printing, first in blue, with other print colors over time. Printed creamware was widely exported.
