Caen, France Photos

The heritage town of Caen, France runs from the former Benedictine abbey Abbaye-aux-Hommes (now Eglise St-Etienne) to Caen Castle. The former Romanesque abbey was founded in 1063 by William the Conqueror, whose tomb is in the church. The abbey played an important role in WWII (June 1944) when Caen's citizens sheltered therein for protection from Allied bombings during the Normandy Invasion while much of the city was destroyed. Caen City Hall is attached to St. Étienne Church. Caen Castle hosts two museums.
