Fontevraud Abbey Photos

Fontevraud Abbey consists of a Romanesque church (1105-65) which hosts tombs of Tomb of Richard the Lionheart, King of England (1189-99) & Henry II Plantagenet, King of England (1154-89). The cloister has a Chapterhouse with 16thC Passion of Christ murals. A unique 12thC kitchen building is of note. The Abbey was converted to a prison after the French Revolution & served as such through WWII where Germans held French Resistance fighters.
