Place Vendome & Column Photos

Place Vendome (1702) buildings forming an octagonal square were designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart. The Place Vendome column (1806-10) was ordered by Napoleon I to celebrate his Dec. 2, 1805 victory at the Battle of Austerlitz. Inspired by Trajan's Column in Rome, the Austerlitz battle scenes were design by sculptor Pierre-Nolasque Bergeret spiral up the column supporting Napoleon's statue.
