Place de la Concorde Photos

The Place de la Concorde is noted for the Luxor Obelisk, a diplomatic gift (1829) to France from Egypt erected (1836) in its center. The obelisk is surrounded by sculptures of major cities in France by several sculptors. On the north side of this square the Hotel de Crillon & Hotel de la Marine buildings (1757) by Ange-Jacques Gabriel which flank a street leading to the Madeleine Church. South of Concorde across the Seine River sits the National Assembly building. Eastward sit the Tuileries Garden and westward the Champs Elysees extends to the Arc du Triomphe.
