Fontaine du Palmier, Paris Photos

Fontaine du Palmier (1806-8) was commissioned by Napoleon to celebrate his victories in Egypt campaign & provide water to local residents at Place du Châtelet. Bands around the column list Napoleon's victories: Arcole (1796), Lodi (1796), the Pyramids (1798), Mont-Tabor (1799), Marengo (1800), Austerlitz (1805), Ulm (1805), Jena (1806), Danzig (1807), & Friedland (1807). The monument topped by a winged victory statue was designed by François-Jean Bralle. The name derives from the engraved palm leaves atop the column.
