St-Michel Fountain Photos

St-Michel Fountain (1858-60) by architect Gabriel Davioud & nine sculptors. The Fountain was designed in style of triumphal arch with optical illusion features to compensate for its off-center position on square. Unlike other arches, the lack of space forced it up against the end of a block of buildings with a closed arch passageway. It was installed under the reign of Emperor Napoleon III to create the grand boulevards and vistas envisaged by Baron Haussmann.
