King Louis XIII Photos |
French King Louis XIII reigned 1610-1643. Louis XIII became King of France and Navarre at Age 9 after the assassination of his father, Henri IV. His mother, Marie de' Medici became regent and did not relinquish power when he came of age. The young king finally took power in 1617 by temporarily exiling his mother and killing some of her followers. During Louis XIII's long reign conflict with Huguenots and other factions continued. Cardinal Richelieu had a major influence on the king during the last 20 years of his reign. Together they maintained control at home and brought about the colonization of Acadia, now Nova Scotia, Canada. After 20 years of marriage and four stillborn children, Louis XIII and Anne of Austria gave birth to Louis XIV. |
