King Henri III Photos

French King Henri III reigned 1574-1589. Henri III became King of France after the deaths of his two older brothers each of whom had reigned. Previously Henri had briefly been the elected monarch of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, but gave up that position upon becoming King of France. Henri III's reign was dominated by the French Wars of Religion. Initially, this conflict was between French Catholics and Protestant Huguenots, but each faction came to be supported by foreign powers for their own purposes. Henri III arranged the assassination of the Duke of Guise, the champion of the Catholic League, causing great outrage among the people. About 7 months later, Henri III himself was assassinated by a young Dominican friar.
