Château de Chantilly, France Photos

From the 16th to19thC, the various owners of Château de Chantilly played an important part in the history of France. The highly ornate Grand Château (c1881) built in Renaissance style, is the fifth castle on the site. The Petit Château (c1560) contains a vast book collection & illuminated manuscripts assembled by the Duke of Aumale (aka Henri of Orleans) as well as an ornate and finely furnished Princes' Apartments. The Musée Condé, whose paintings were assembled in the 19thC by Duke of Aumale, is in the Grand Château. It contains the second largest collection of 16th-19thC paintings in France. On the grounds are the Grand Stables (18thC) housing the Museum of the Horse and the well-known Chantilly racecourse.
