Eixample, Barcelona Photos

While the Gothic Quarter where Barcelona started in Roman times hugs the port, its narrow, twisting streets and city walls became an obstacle for urban advancement. In the mid 19th century, city fathers decided to tear down the ancient walls to allow expansion. In 1859, Civil Engineer Ildefons Cerdà i Sunyer devised a plan for a street grid to surround the old town and to control development. This street grid and district was named the Eixample. One notable feature is that the streets intersections don't form square crosses. Rather each corner is octagon shaped and corner buildings chamfered, opening up intersections to light and adding visual interest. By 1900, the building boom in the Eixample was employing innovative Modernista architecture, which is the Catalan version of Art Nouveau, making this district an interesting place to walk. Prominent streets in the Eixample include the Paseig de Gracias and the Gran Via.
