Neuschwanstein Castle, Schwangau Photos

Neuschwanstein Castle & Schwangau village, located in the Bavarian Alps near the Austrian border, are known for Hohenschwangau Castle (1837) and, particularly, Neuschwanstein Castle(1886) built by the Bavarian Kings Maximillian II and his son, Louis II (aka Mad King Ludwig). Both are accessed through the village of Schwangau on Alpsee Lake. Visitors can learn more about these Kings at the Museum of the Bavarian Kings. Neuschwanstein Castle, in its rugged setting, is by far the best known of all German castles, and was built by Louis II to fulfill his romantic view of medieval monarchy. The castle was still incomplete upon his mysterious death in 1886 and opened as a museum shortly thereafter.
