Altona, Hamburg Photos

Altona (founded c1535), located on the Elbe River west of Hamburg city center, was under the administration of Denmark, for which it was a very important harbor, from 1640 until 1864. It then was an independent city until becoming part of Hamburg in1937. Until WWII Altona was a major center of Jewish life and culture. A memorial, dedicated to the Jewish population lost during the Nazi era, is in front of Altona city hall.
