Royal Gorge, Canon City, CO Photos

The Royal Gorge is a canyon of the Arkansas River upriver from Canon City, CO. The bottom of the gorge was first used to carry a railroad for mining and today these tracks carry the Royal Gorge Route Scenic Railway. In 1929, the Royal Gorge suspension bridge was built and at a height of 956ft / 291m and a length of 1,260ft / 384m became a tourist attraction. Both ends of the bridge host amusement rides and other entertainment such as an aerial tram, which have not spoiled the scenic vistas which remain the main reason for a visit.
