Houmas Plantation on Mississippi River Road Photos

Houmas Plantation (1790s & 1840) (40136 LA 942 in Burnside, LA) is richly restored with a rich collection of museum-quality antiques. The house & extensive gardens are open for tours. A restaurant occupies the original plantation house built in 1775 by Alexander Latil. Wade Hampton built the columned house in the late 1820s, one of the first in Neoclassical style in the region. In 1858, John Burnside purchased the house & accumulated 300,000 acres of sugar plantations making him "Sugar Prince of Louisiana".
