Henry Flagler Photos

Henry Morrison Flagler (Jan. 1, 1830 - May 20, 1913) made his first fortune as partner in Standard Oil with John D. Rockefeller. Inspired by a visit to St Augustine, in 1885, Flagler built his first hotel, the Ponce de Leon in St Augustine, then essentially the southernmost city in Florida. With vision, Flagler pushed a railroad south through what was then swamp, making towns like Palm Beach & Miami Beach into swish resorts. His Florida East Coast Railroad reached Key West by 1912. Flagler is considered one of the builders of Florida.
