Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol, England Photos

Clifton Suspension Bridge (1864), located outside Bristol, spans the Avon River & gorge. From initial idea for a bridge to its completion took more than 100 years, & many designs were in competition along the way. In the end a design by Barlow & Hawkshaw, based on an earlier design by Islam Kingdom Brunel, was chosen. Of note are the bridge's lengthy single-span design, & the three sets of independent wrought iron eyebar chain links supporting that structure. The beautiful bridge, which can be crossed by car or pedestrian walkway, offers fine views of the surrounding countryside.
